From the Principal's Desk

Dear Wharton Families,

Thank you for attending our Open House yesterday. I hope you had a chance to learn more about your teachers and your students' classrooms.

Some of you have asked about the Spark Park sign at the gate to the playground on West Gray. We know many of you are eagerly anticipating the opening of the park and we are working diligently to make it happen. We have ordered the items needed and are working on the logistics of running the park. We will keep you updated. Thank you for your patience!

Please note that there have been changes to HISD's Ready, Set, Go Plan. Make sure to read Nurse Dana's updates for details.

Remember that next week students only have classes Monday through Wednesday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. Jennifer Day

Nurse's Notes

Dear Parents,

We've seen an increase in stomach viruses in the past two weeks. Please go over hand washing techniques with your children.

  • Wet your hands (turn off the water so they don’t immediately rinse off the soap)
  • Apply soap and scrub for at least 20 seconds (singing happy birthday twice or alphabet once)
  • Rinse hands thoroughly
  • Dry completely (wet hands attract germs)

Here are some handwashing resources you can use:

Drills

We'll have a fire drill next week. Here is a list of the drills we will be doing this year. Take a moment and go over them with your child and discuss the importance of following directions.

  • Secure - one per school year
  • Lockdown - two per school year (one per semester)
  • Evacuate - one per school year
  • Shelter-in-Place for Hazmat - one per school year
  • Shelter for Severe Weather - one per school year
  • Fire drills - once a month

Walker/Bicycle Safety – Coach Vann and Coach Cardinal will be discussing bike and walker safety with your children soon.

Notification of COVID cases – HISD has changed its policy and asked that we only notify the teachers and classes that are directly affected by a positive case. This ensures that the children most at risk are notified first.

Temperature Checks
We will no longer be taking temperatures during drop-off. Please see the Superintendent’s letter regarding this issue. Our Wharton team will continue to assess children when they enter the school, but it all starts with YOU (the parents/guardians). Don’t send your children to school sick. If they are sick, they must quarantine for 10 days, but to qualify for an early return you must have a doctor’s note AND a negative COVID test.

Thank you,

Nurse Dana

In addition to our exceptional dual-language curriculum, Wharton proudly offers every Pre-K through 5th-grade student an International Baccalaureate (IB) education. The program is funded entirely by parent contributions to the PTO through ¡Juntos! In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about the benefits of an IB education. Stay tuned!

Here's How You Can Help
Last year, 83 Wharton families donated $35,400 toward our goal of $43,000. This year, we need more Wharton families to join our effort! Will you help us reach our goal of 150 families donating $50,000?

  • Donate monthly for a year or the entirety of your child’s time at Wharton
  • Make a one-time donation in the amount of your choice

Bonus! Every family who donates to ¡Juntos! will receive an exclusive ¡Juntos! sticker.

Any amount helps! Donate today at whartonpto.org/juntos.

Juntos means together, and together we can sustain Wharton’s IB program!
