From the Principal's Desk

Dear Wharton Families,

A lot is happening at Wharton. I hope that you'll join us at the virtual Parent Meeting on Wednesday and at the events that our PTO has planned for Hispanic Heritage Month

The HISD School Choice application period for 2022-2023 is now open. HISD will be hosting a virtual School Choice Fair tomorrow from 9 AM and 12 PM. Wharton will also host virtual magnet tours starting next Thursday. Please check our school website for more information.

Because Wharton is a Title I school, we ask that you read the following documents: Title I Status Notification, Title I Teacher and Paraprofessional Qualification, and Title I School-Parent Compact. Mr. Ruben Gomez will be discussing them further during our parent meeting.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend,

Ms. Jennifer Day

Nurse's Notes

Dear Parents,

It’s flu season! We are starting to see some flu cases. Get your flu shot soon. Interestingly, it is okay to get your COVID booster/vaccine and your flu shot together. Read more.

Strep throat is also showing up in the lower grade levels. That is one of the reasons HISD requires a doctor’s note prior to coming back to school. There are a lot of germs out there.

September is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. If your child is complaining of headaches, squinting, or spending too much time on their electronics, you may want to get their eyes checked. I will be doing vision/hearing and pre-diabetes (acanthosis nigricans) screenings next month for PK, K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th graders. Prevent Blindness.

As always, wash your hands, keep your distance and wear your mask. The COVID new cases are fluctuating, but are still high. See Harris County COVID-19 Data Hub.

Thank you,

Nurse Dana

Stay tuned for more information about the benefits of an IB education in the coming weeks!

For now, here's how you can help

  • Make a one-time donation in the amount of your choice

Bonus! Every family who donates to ¡Juntos! will receive an exclusive ¡Juntos! sticker.

In other news for this month:

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Texas and across the nation. Here are some helpful links to educate yourself and help raise awareness about the importance of mental health and suicide prevention.

  • Knowing the signs and symptoms of mental health and having a sense of suicide awareness is important when raising kids. Knowing how to talk openly about it and get help can make a world of difference. Learn more.
  • If you're concerned your child may be struggling with a mental health condition, you're not alone. The stigma surrounding mental health disorders in children can lead parents to miss early warning signs and delay getting kids the help they need. Learn more.
  • Reports of depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide among Texas students are rising as the pandemic drags on. The Texas Tribune has a resource guide for those seeking help.

DYK at least 40% of Texas kids who were bullied or cyberbullied have seriously considered suicide. If you or your kid need someone to talk to about a challenge your kid is facing, the Texas Youth Helpline is available 24/7 for free.
