Dear Wharton Families,

As we enter the winter break, I hope you are looking forward to spending more time as a family. I encourage you to take time during the busy holiday season to enjoy old traditions and create new ones with your children. Bake together, make holiday cards for relatives and neighbors, read together, and spend time with each other.

In staff news, I wanted to share that the newest member of our Wharton faculty, Coach Rawley Farris’s last day with us will be December 21, 2022.  While his time with us has been short, we appreciate his contributions and wish him the very best in his future endeavors. 

Please note that HISD School Choice applications for Phase I are open. Students in 5th or 8th grade must apply to their schools of choice using this application system. If your 5th grader is interested in staying at Wharton, they need to reapply via the School Choice system. Please reach out to Ms. Syreeta Lazarus with any questions about the application process, and find more information about the magnet application timeline below.

To ensure families have the most updated information, we are sharing the HISD attendance policy for reference, which includes the 90% Credit Rule, Excused Absences, and Unexcused Absences. Please see the updated attendance policy as communicated by TEA.

Elementary students will enjoy the story of greedy teenager Eboni Scrooge on a wild ride with three ghosts who teach her the true meaning of Christmas: generosity and goodwill toward all critters.

Thank you to all the families who participated in our Holiday Cheer Drive. Thanks to your generous contributions, we were able to deliver 11 food baskets to deserving Wharton families!

We are very grateful for all the families who reached out to sponsor students as part of our Wharton Angels program. We have matched all students to a sponsor. The deadline to drop off your wrapped gift is Monday, December 19. 

Thank you to everyone who participated in our first post-pandemic Eagle Clubs during the Fall semester! We hope your students enjoyed these wonderful enrichment opportunities led by our teachers and staff. 

We will send out enrollment information for the Spring semester Eagle Clubs in late January.

Parents, remember that ALL students that have fever, diarrhea, or vomiting and are sent home from school, must be symptom-free for 24 hours without medication before coming back to school. This policy is to keep the rest of the students healthy.

We have had many cases of pink eye this week. Pink eye is usually unilateral, discharge, crusty, pink/red sclera. Please keep your children home. Reinforce with your children to wash their hands!

Hazel health (telehealth program) will be available at our school clinic in January. Keep an eye out for more information.

Phase I of School Choice applications is now open. 5th and 8th-grade students should apply to their schools of choice during this window.
