From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We finalized our preparations to welcome back students returning to in person learning next week for the 4th sixth week grading period. Please make sure you review Nurse Dana's presentation with very helpful information.  For all in person students for safety reasons please make sure your student is always wearing their school provided lanyard.

As we begin the month of February, we pause and pay tribute to the immense contributions of the generations of African Americans who have made a mark on history. This year marks the 95th Black History Month. Please save the date for our Annual Black History program which will be held virtually on Feb. 25.

Have a good weekend,

Jennifer Day

Nurse's Notes

Please remember parents are not allowed to come to Wharton to drop off lunches.  If the student forgets their lunch they can get an HISD provided lunch.  If your student has health conditions which require that they bring their lunch with them but they forget this is the only exception where a parent may drop off their lunch.

Note: it is very important for all students to keep track of their school provided lanyard.  If your student looses their lanyard we will ask for a $2 donation for a replacement.

Parents if your student is returning to in person learning next week please read the following presentation carefully.

IB Notes

IB Exhibition Mentors needed! Please email Ms. Patricia Selin at pselin@houstonisd.org to volunteer to mentor a 5th-grade student or small group of students during their IB Exhibition. 3rd and 4th-gradeparents: this is a great opportunity to see first-hand what your child will be doing in 5th grade!

Thank you to everyone who has supported our Juntos fundraising campaign to continue Wharton's International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme. So far, we have 69 families who have donated a total of $31,010. We need another 40 families to donate to get us to our goal of $43,000.

Wharton's PTO funds this program in its entirety and the pandemic has prevented us from hosting our largest fundraisers. Will you donate to help us keep our IB program?

Wharton Middle School

Speakers: In order to emphasize the continuous need to advance our student’s biliteracy skills, we are inviting parents and community members that use Spanish in their profession to come speak to our Middle School students. We hope to emphasize to our students the importance of continuing with their Spanish and expose them to a potential career path at the same time. If you would be interested in speaking to our students, please contact Ivonne Aguirre.

8th Grade Parents:  we are looking for volunteers to help with end of year festivities.  If you would like to help please contact Ivonne Aguirre.

Arts Programming

Art League: During the spring semester, 7th & 8th grade students will have a 7-week residency in Spanish with a teaching artist from the Art League of Houston. We will have a drive-through day for students to come by campus to pick up the art supplies. This is being generously provided through a grant with Arts Connect and the Art League of Houston.

DACAMERA: Our 6th grade students will participate in a music residency during their World Cultures in Spanish class with Mr. Vigil in the spring. During this residency called “Finding Home,” DACAMERA Young Artists will work with our students to create interactive performances featuring folk music that is important to our community. Students research folk music from their community while focusing on their own family traditions.

Once community folk music has been discovered, a DACAMERA Young Artist composer will arrange some of the music, chosen by students, for either string quartet or solo harp. These arrangements will then be programmed along with other folk music from around the world on a virtual concert for the Wharton community. This opportunity is being generously provided through a grant from Da Camera.
