Dear Wharton Families,
I hope you are all staying safe and well and that you have not suffered much damage from the winter storm. This has been a challenging year for all of us and we understand your concern and frustration over the instructional time that has been lost this year due to both the pandemic and now the loss of power and water over the past week.
Please keep in mind that the schedule HISD shared with all of us for this week is due to many factors. These decisions have to be made equitably at a district level, taking into consideration that many campuses are dealing with broken pipes, lack of water, and structural damage. Also, many families at all campuses are struggling with damage to their homes, lack of food, water, and interruption to their internet service, as well as family members with Covid. This includes not only the families of our students but those of our faculty and staff as well.
I pride our campus on being a thoughtful, caring, and sharing community that looks out not just for ourselves, but for everyone. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to not have suffered loss during this time are willing and able to help those of us who have. We will be checking in with all of our families over the next couple of days to see what resources you may need to be ready to begin virtual instruction the rest of the week and hopefully either continue with that or return in person next week. Please reach out to us if you are in need of anything and we will help you find needed resources.
In the meantime, if your child is able to connect online today and tomorrow to continue with asynchronous learning using the HISD resources and those that your teacher has provided or use materials that we sent home in anticipation of the inclement weather, please be sure they do. One of the most important things your child can do while at home is read, read, read! As I am informed by the district about how this loss of instructional time will be made up, I will share it with you. Wharton is an innovative campus and we will continue to work to find solutions for our students and teachers to focus instruction so that our students do not fall behind.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Day
Principal
