Dear Parent/Guardian,

Parents, it’s nearly that time! Wharton families may update their selection for in-person or virtual instruction for the final six weeks of the school year. The selection period runs from Monday, April 12 through Friday, April 16. Make your selection atHISD Connect.

As temperatures get hotter, your children may need more water and possibly a hat for when they play outside. Please keep this in mind and make sure you send them to school prepared.

We have some updates regarding summer. Wharton will not be hosting a summer enrichment camp this summer but we will offer summer school. More details further below.

There are a few remaining Title I Parent Meetings for this semester. We will post the Teams link on the school's website.

"What Parents of Dual Language Learners Should Know"  
Thursday, April 15 at 6 PM

PK-2nd Grade Parents! Hear about the ins and outs of dual language learning, the impact of being a dual language learner, and how parents can support their dual language learners at home. We'll be joined by guest speaker Amanda Seewald, an educator, teacher coach, and advocate for language learning.

Wharton Summer Programming

Wharton will not be offering its summer language enrichment camp this summer. We anticipate being able to have it next summer 2022.

We will, however, be offering Summer Spark, an HISD summer school program. This program will be offered to students who are enrolled in grades PK-12 by the last day of school and have been retained for the year or need additional support.

Parents will have the option to select either in-person or virtual instruction for Summer Spark through the HISD Connect Parent Portal. Below are the camp dates.

Updated CDC Domestic Travel Guidelines

Have You Been Fully Vaccinated?

People are considered fully vaccinated:

  • 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
  • 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine

If you don’t meet these requirements, you are NOT fully vaccinated. Keep taking allprecautionsuntil you are fully vaccinated.

International travel guidelines have not changed yet. You still need to test before and after and self-quarantine for 7 days. Check CDC’sTesting and International Air Travelbefore planning your trip. 

Growth, Development, Hygiene Talk for 4th Graders

Mask Reminder: Please wash your child’s cloth masks daily. They have to wear it all day, so if it is fresh and clean, they will feel better about wearing it. If I see a child with a soiled mask, I give them a disposable for them to wear.

HELP, calling all gardeners/landscapers! We are seeing a lot of bee activity (i.e. bee stings). Does anyone know of an organic, healthy way to get rid of the weeds/clover?

There are some technical issues with the GT identification matrix. The HISD G/T Department is currently working with the HISD technology department to resolve them.

The results from the evaluation for GT identification are being mailed home directly from the HISD GT Department. We will send home the test results with our in-person students and mail home the results for virtual students after that. Please be sure your mailing address is correct inHISD Connect Parent Portal. University of Houston – Downtown STEM Summer Camp
(HISD Student Application Deadline Extension: April 25)

STEM summer camp opportunity! The Houston Prefreshman Enrichment Program (Houston PREP) aims to enhance the academic backgrounds of socially and economically disadvantaged students at the middle and high school level. The curriculum focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses in order to improve student’s comprehension of these topics and emphasize the importance of STEM fields in today’s world. Program participants must commit themselves to six weeks of intellectually demanding classes.

DACAMERA
Parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles: Please share your stories and music with your 6th grader! This will help sixth grade Wharton students in Mr. Vigil's World Cultures as they learn about folk music from around the world and from their own cultural background during their DACAMERA residency! 

ART LEAGUE
Our 7th & 8th grade students continue their 7-week residency in Spanish with Moe Penders, teaching artist from the Art League of Houston. Thank you, Ms. Gonzalez, for sharing your class time with the Art League!
