SUBJECT: Important Information PK-8th: STAAR Testing

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please read the information below regarding STAAR testing for this school year. Even if your child is not in a testing grade, please look at the schedule below for days when your student(s) may have to stay home for asynchronous instruction.

HISD requested and was approved by TEA for a waiver that allows for a Hybrid Instruction Model during Testing Days. Under this waiver, schools may request that face-to-face students in grade levels that are not testing remain home for virtual instruction and asynchronous work during the testing window. This will help ensure social distancing protocols and enough test administrators, testing spaces, monitors, and support staff available on testing days. Please also be aware that STAAR testing will be administered entirely online this year.

Please see the SCHEDULE for STAAR test dates and note the following:

  • Face-to-face AND virtual students who are taking the STAAR will need to be on campus on testing days in order to take the test on an HISD device at the school campus. Personal laptops and tablets will not be needed on their scheduled testing days and should be left at home. Any personal student cell phones will need to be collected during testing; therefore, we recommend that students leave them at home as well. Face-to-face students and virtual students will be separated during testing.

  • Some grade levels will remain at home to work asynchronously on testing days as noted on the schedule. Teachers will not be able to respond to messages via phone call or text message until testing is complete.

All students who are face-to-face are expected to be on campus and to complete STAAR testing. If your child is a face-to-face student and will not participate in STAAR testing, please complete the HISD State Assessment “Non-Participation” Form and email it to lhancock@houstonisd.org by April 20

If your child is currently a virtual student, he/she has the option to come to campus to complete STAAR testing. Virtual students who come to campus to test should be dropped off at 8:15 a.m. on their scheduled testing days at the main office entrance (enter via W. Gray gate). Virtual students will call to be picked up once they are done testing. Virtual students will need to be picked up after testing and should not plan to stay on campus with their class.

Per TEA, virtual students who do not come to campus to test will NOT be penalized for not taking the STAAR tests this year.

We want to assure you that multiple scenarios have been discussed to ensure that our plan is safe and in the best interest of our students. We truly appreciate your flexibility with the many changes that have occurred this year and are grateful for your support.

For additional questions, please feel free to contact the campus testing coordinator, Ms. Hancock at lhancock@houstonisd.org, or 713-556-5160.

Thank you,

Lisa Hancock
