From the Principal's Desk

Dear Wharton Families,

Depending on their age, your students may or may not be aware of this difficult time of war in Europe. They may hear about it in class or from friends and we need to help them learn how to manage their anger and fear and replace it with love, thankfulness, and hope.

I received a message from IB addressing the time of crisis and conflict in the world. IB is committed to doing what it can for Ukrainian students under very difficult conditions and it has put together a variety of resources to use in classrooms and in homes: Supporting Students and Schools Impacted by Crisis. These materials are designed to help support well-being and provide opportunities for safe dialogues. Please take a look.

I look forward to seeing you next Wednesday, March 30 for Coffee with the Principal at the school cafeteria. Don't forget that there are no classes this coming Monday, March 28.

Have a great weekend!

Jennifer Day

😴 Sleep is so important to children’s ability to learn. Please ensure your children get enough sleep. Here is a guide to how much sleep children need. It varies based on age.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:

  • Infants under 1 year: 12-16 hours
  • Children 1-2 years old: 11-14 hours
  • Children 3-5 years old: 10-13 hours
  • Children 6-12 years old: 9-12 hours
  • Teenagers 13-18 years old: 8-10 hours

Here is more information on Children and Sleep

🦠 While the COVID numbers are going down, other viruses are going up. Influenza A type is prevalent here in Harris county. Strep throat was identified in 1st grade and the child presented with no fever, but very swollen tonsils. We have also had some diarrhea cases in the same grade. Proper handwashing is essential to keep the transmission of viruses down.

💉Immunizations: Please make sure your child’s immunizations are complete. I sent home referral letters before spring break. Please email me if you have any questions at dana.bethancourt@houstonisd.org.
