From the Principal's Desk

Dear Wharton Families,

I hope you had a wonderful week. I wanted to share the work of our 7th graders, who reported and wrote their own news stories based on fictional scenarios for their journalism unit. We're so proud of their work! The students wore press badges, interviewed teachers and administrators, took photos, and designed their own news pages. Take a look at some pictures.

We have had a change in our Communities in the Schools (CIS) Student Support Manager. Please join me in welcoming Ms. Katerin Jaime, who began at Wharton on Monday. Ms. Anna Garza will no longer be at Wharton. We wish her well as she completes her graduate school program in social work. Ms. Jaime’s email is kjaime@cis-houston.org.

Have a great weekend!

HISD 2021-2022 Promotion Standards

In order for HISD students to be promoted to the next grade level, they must show that they have met the district's promotion standards. These standards generally include classroom grades, local or state tests, and attendance as follows:

  • State requirement of overall yearly grade average of 70 or above and local requirement of a grade average of 70 or above in reading, language arts, mathematics, and science or social studies.
  • Passing scores (perform satisfactorily) on STAAR tests*
  • Sufficient attendance—a student's total number of unexcused absences cannot exceed 10 percent of class meetings.

*Accelerated Learning Committees

  • Accelerated Learning Committees are required for any student who did not perform satisfactorily on STAAR or STAAR Alt 2 in Math and Reading for grades 3, 5, and 8.

Please see the HISD 2021-2022 Promotion Standards document for detailed promotion standards by grade level.

Nurse's Notes
Tree Pollen Count

The oak tree pollen count set a new record! I am seeing a lot of allergy symptoms with all of this pollen. Advise your children not to rub their eyes, but just wash with a paper towel, if irritated. Taking a daily over-the-counter child’s antihistamine (ex. Zyrtec or Claritin) is a good preventative measure.

The water fountains are back on! No more plastic waste on campus. We will probably have the new water bottle fillers installed during the summer.

Dress code: We are noticing a number of students wearing cut-up jeans, short skirts or mid-drift tops. This is not the dress code. Your students will be asked to change clothes. If we don’t have anything for them, we will ask you to bring different clothes.

Parking lot safety: For everyone’s safety, during drop-off and dismissal, we need to be able to see the students walking to and from their cars. We have posted signs in the windows. Go to the end of the parking area, if you need to assist your children at drop-off. If you park near the front office during the day, please move your car by 3:15 PM.
