From the Principal's Desk

Dear Wharton Families,

We only have two more days of school! I hope everyone has a wonderful summer break and is ready to start an exciting new school year in the fall. I look forward to a great year and to meeting and seeing all of our new and returning children and families come August.

To prepare for our adventure into the coming school year, I am including important information in the Back to School section. We will send any important updates over the summer via email, but please also check our website and Facebook for information.

If you haven't done so already, this is a great time for you to go to the HISD Parent Portal and update your information by filling out the Student Verification Form

Please encourage your children to read this summer! Students should remember to read at least five books over the break. More information about the Houston Public Library's Summer Reading Program is included below.

Thank you for all your support during this school year.

Have a wonderful summer!

Yearbook Update

We have a shipping delay, so our yearbook will not be in before the end of the school year. We will post a notice and send out emails when they arrive and are ready for pickup. We are looking for a Parent Volunteer to be the coordinator for next school year and also help with the distribution this year. Please send us a message today if you are interested.

Nurse's Notes

Party Planning: Parents, please only bring store-bought (with labels) snacks. This is important if a student develops a food allergy while on campus, and so we can identify the ingredients. Individually wrapped snacks are still the best!

Summer Reading

Keep your students reading this summer! Students start earning free books and other cool swag with just 20 minutes of reading through the Houston Public Library's (HPL) Oceans of Possibilities summer reading program. Registration is now open and it's easy: sign up for a free Beanstack account to track reading progress. There are three levels to choose from: Babies and Toddlers, Kids (K-5), and Teens (6-12).

Students can read hardbacks, paperbacks, and ebooks – everything counts! Every 20 minutes of reading earns one entry into random drawings for free books, STEM kits, and other swag; the more reading time completed, the more entries students earn! Electronic badges are also earned along the way for milestones and goals.

But that’s not all – HPL’s Summer program also includes camps, STEM classes, a traveling petting zoo, crafting events, the Jolley Trolley, and much more. There are prizes for the whole family too, so get everyone reading this summer!  Check out www.houstonlibrary.org/fun for more information.

Back to School

Please make note of these important dates:

August 2 - August 4
Middle School Bridge Academy
Middle School students are invited to attend a three-day academy at Wharton to receive important information regarding middle school policies, curriculum, clubs, after-school activities, community service, and more. Middle school shirts/hoodies will be on sale. Please mark your calendars and join us!

August 19
Meet the Teacher
PK-5 parents and students are invited to visit Wharton to find out classroom assignments, meet your teacher(s), and visit classrooms. Due to the large volume of visitors, the schedule is staggered with 1st-5th grade invited from 4:30 PM-5:30 PM and PK-K from 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM.

August 22
First Day of School
A new school year begins!

September 8
Open House
We encourage you to attend to learn more about the expectations and procedures of your child’s classroom.

Useful Links

We will be updating our school website with school supplies lists, dress code, school hours, daily procedures, and other useful information in the coming weeks.

Looking forward to the next grade
We know how exciting it is to start a new school year, start the next grade level with fresh school supplies, and see our friends again! We also recognize that a new teacher and a new room can make our students and parents nervous about the new classroom environment. We want to reassure all families that in collaboration with the teachers and leadership team, we put a lot of thought and effort into creating our class lists for the following year. While we have to consider many variables when creating class rosters (i.e. home language, demographics, gender, academic level, 504/SPED classification, etc.), we know that the relationship between a student and teacher is vital to student progress and academic growth. Due to the many pieces that we have to consider as we form our classes, we are unable to accept teacher requests for your child. We appreciate your understanding.

Looking Ahead
