SUBJECT: Wharton DLA Newsletter 10.07.22

October 7, 2022
From the Principal's Desk

Dear Wharton Families,

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a time to focus on and raise awareness of bullying. This is a serious issue that impacts thousands of students every day, but it can be prevented with education and awareness.

At Wharton, we'll be raising awareness about bullying among our students throughout the month. You can help at home, too. Here is a helpful guide for parents: Bullying Prevention 101: A Quick Guide for Parents.

We have included some important reminders about procedures for early pick-up and visiting the school.

I hope you have a restful weekend!

Jennifer Day
Principal

National Principals Month

October is National Principals Month! We invite all students, parents, staff, and community members to honor and thank our amazing principal, Ms. Day.

To show appreciation, please download a custom e-card, print it out, and include a message to give to your principal or post it on social media throughout the month using the hashtag #ThankAnHISDPrincipal. Make sure to tag @WhartonDual and @HoustonISD on Twitter and @houstontxisd on Instagram.

Let's show Ms. Day how much we appreciate all she does for Wharton!

Nurse's Notes

Houston ISD has a shortage of CPR/AED/First Aid instructors. I want to help our school and district by becoming a certified Red Cross instructor and training our staff. I am also interested in teaching a babysitting class for our middle school students. We will need manikins and AED trainers for all of the classes so I have created a Donors Choose project. Any contribution helps!

Keep 'Em Coming: Middle School Donations to Ms. Acevedo's Class Dojo Store

Did you know that Middle School students win points for participation in Spanish class? To encourage our MS students to practice speaking and engage more, Ms. Acevedo awards points to active students. Those points can be saved to purchase things from her Class Dojo store.

Items in Ms. Acevedo's Class Dojo Store range from snacks to school supplies -- thank you parents for your donations to support this initiative!

If you'd like to contribute to Ms. Acevedo's Class Dojo Store, visit her Amazon Wishlist. Don't forget to put your child's name on the gift receipt!

LatAm Travel Opportunity for MS Students

Ms. Valles is exploring an opportunity for Middle School students to participate in a trip to Costa Rica during the 2023-2024 school year.

She is still in the information-gathering stage of this initiative, and more information is coming - but please start considering this exciting possibility.

If this sounds like something in which your Wharton MS student would like to participate, Ms. Valles is holding a virtual meeting to provide more information and answer questions on Monday, Oct. 24.

Look to future newsletters for more information and the link to join the first meeting!

6th Grade Take The Stage Residency Coming to Wharton!

Wharton is excited to announce that our 6th graders will be participating in a residency with Take the Stage starting in January. Students will be creating a film from concept to premiere completely in Spanish. They will write the film and learn all the technical aspects of filmmaking, including acting in the film they write. We cannot wait!
