From the Principal's Desk

Dear Wharton Families,

I hope you had a fantastic time at the Fall Festival! I loved seeing our community come together at this great event.

Thank you to the parents who joined me at Coffee with the Principal last week. If you missed it, you can view the presentation here

Next week is Red Ribbon Week. We will be raising awareness and educating our students about living a drug-free life. See more information about the themed dress days below.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Events & Programs

October 24-28
Red Ribbon Week
This year’s theme is: Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free. Help Wharton celebrate and raise awareness of living a drug-free life by participating in these themed dress days.

October 25
Mix It Up at Lunch
Students in grades 4-8 will participate in Wharton's first Mix It Up at Lunch Day. Mix It Up at Lunch Day is an international campaign that encourages students to identify, question, and cross social boundaries. So we ask students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch.

October 31, 2 PM
Storybook Character Parade - PK-5th Grade
We can’t wait to see our students dressed as a character from a favorite book! Help your students create homemade costumes using items you already have at home. We also ask that students make a sign/poster identifying their book and favorite character. Students should wear their uniforms to school and change into their costumes in the afternoon before the parade. Parents are welcome to attend the parade. See flyer for more details >>

GT & IB at Wharton

GT Testing
This school year, parents of 1st through 8th-grade students need to submit a request for GT testing. Please email your child's homeroom teacher and Ms. Silva to initiate the process. Then, submit a request through PowerSchool (see instructions). The 1st through 8th grade GT testing window will be from January 10 to February 11, 2023.

Nurse's Notes

We will start Covid testing on campus with Fulgent on November 7 and then after Thanksgiving. Please watch for updates if you would like your child to participate.

We have finished screening for hearing, vision, and acanthosis nigricans (pre-diabetes marker) for K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades. I will retest anyone who failed the first time and send referrals next week.

The See To Succeed program offers free eye exams and free glasses to anyone who needs them. Wharton’s field trip is planned for the week of January 23-27. If your child needs glasses, please email me at dana.bethancourt@houstonisd.org. The consent forms will go out next week and the deadline to return the consent is November 4.

Help Me Become a Certified Red Cross Instructor

I want to help our school and district by becoming a certified Red Cross instructor and training our staff. I am also interested in teaching a babysitting class for our middle school students. We will need manikins and AED trainers for all of the classes.

Please support my DonorsChoose project! Give by October 28 and your donation will be doubled thanks to DonorsChoose. Just enter the code LIFTOFF on the payment page and you'll be matched dollar for dollar (up to $50). Any contribution helps.

Wharton Middle School
Creativity + Math = Brilliance!

Mr. Vigil's seventh-grade math students have been learning about composite figures, which is are figures made of shapes. For a special project, students were assigned to create a composite figure of a three-dimensional object.

Being selected as the most creative for their assignment, Sofia Turrubiartes and Daniel Melo-Trejo created a human figure and a snow cone, respectively. Bravo!
