SUBJECT: Wharton DLA Newsletter 09.30.22

September 30, 2022
From the Principal's Desk

Dear Wharton Families,

I hope you are enjoying the slightly cooler weather. This week was busy at Wharton! Our school community gathered to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and our elementary school students enjoyed a performance of the Alley Theatre's "Oskar's Not So Simple Comeback." Programs like Oskar are part of our continued efforts to support our students' social-emotional learning.

For families with older students, I wanted to share an article I came across that has tips and suggestions on peacefully parenting your tween. You may read it here – I hope you find it useful.

A reminder that HISD is hosting a series of community town halls to get feedback from the community. These meetings are good opportunities to learn more about HISD and ask questions. See the schedule here.

Don't forget that next week students don't have classes on Tuesday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 5.

Have a good weekend,

Jennifer Day
Principal

October is National Principals Month! We invite all students, parents, staff, and community members to honor and thank our amazing principal, Ms. Day.

To show appreciation, please download a custom e-card, print it out, and include a message to give to your principal or post it on social media throughout the month using the hashtag #ThankAnHISDPrincipal. Make sure to tag @WhartonDual and @HoustonISD on Twitter and @houstontxisd on Instagram.

GT & IB at Wharton

GT Testing
This school year, all 1st through 8th-grade students need to submit a request for GT testing through PowerSchool. The 1st through 8th grade GT testing window will be from January 10 to February 11, 2023. Please email your child's homeroom teacher and Ms. Silva to initiate the process.

Gifted Education Plan and Renzulli
Our teachers have diligently been developing your GT student's gifted education plan in collaboration with your child. Over the last few weeks, your child has had the opportunity to fill out his or her learner profile through the Renzulli application. Our teachers then use this personalized information to develop the gifted education plan to differentiate the instructional needs of your learner. Renzulli is a wonderful resource for our GT students. We recommend that students extend their in-class learning and use the application at home.

The H in the password must be upper case.

Nurse's Notes

5th-grade vision/hearing/AN screenings will take place on Monday, October 3. Please make sure your child brings their glasses and comes to school on time.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Safety Corner

PK/K Parents: Please don’t pass on the left of the car line, park and walk across the street to drop off your children. It slows down the line and it is unsafe.

Drop-off: Entrance doors open at 8:20 a.m., peripheral doors and gates close at 8:30 a.m., and the main entrance gate stays open all day.

Dismissal: Peripheral doors/gates open at 3:45 p.m. Dismissal starts at 3:50 p.m. and ends at 4:05 p.m. If you come later than that, please park your car and pick up your student from the main office. We do not have enough staff to stay outside with your children.

Wharton Middle School

Winning at Life: Middle School Raffle
Did you know Middle School homeroom teachers give out raffle tickets every Friday to students that have written in their agendas every day?

How we organize ourselves is an important life skill, and the middle school teachers are working to encourage organizational journaling with the sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Middle school students who have been keeping up with their agendas daily will be entered into a raffle for gift cards.

The first raffle will be held on Monday, Oct. 3 – students must be present to win.

Get to Know Your Student Council
Wharton's Middle School Student Council is a teacher-sponsored volunteer and service organization that represents the middle school student body.

By joining this group, sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students learn leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, while strengthening their logistics, fundraising, and entrepreneurial muscles.

From organizing the blanket and sock drive for the homeless to collecting toiletries for the Houston Area Women's Center, from fundraising for eighth-grade graduation activities to planning the middle school dances, the Student Council works to connect both the Wharton community and support our larger community.

Middle School Student Council meetings are held after school every other Wednesday in Ms. Valle's classroom on the third floor. Their next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 12 – and they'd love to see you there!

Stay tuned for updates on Student Council's upcoming initiatives and how you can support this service organization.
