The Pre-K application for the 2025-2026 school year opened January 22, 2025. The Early Childhood department will offer virtual and in-person parent information sessions to provide guidance on Pre-K eligibility requirements and the application process.

Pre-K Reminders

  • Returning 3 Year- Olds: Students enrolled in Pre-K as a three-year old will be automatically enrolled at the same school as a Pre-K four-year old. These parents do NOT need to apply to this application unless they are seeking to change schools.
  • New Students: All students who are starting school in HISD for the first time next year must submit an application to indicate they want to attend their zoned school.
  • New Non- Zoned Students: Parents of Pre-K students interested in a Pre-K campus other than their zoned campus must apply to this application and rank up to 10 options. If space is available in a school after zoned students are provided seats, a lottery will be held for the remaining seats.

Pre-K 4 to Kindergarten Reminders

  • Students will be automatically enrolled in their zoned school for Kindergarten. Parents do not need to apply to this application if they would like their student to attend this school.
    • Important exception: If a child is in Pre-K 4 at a separate and unique magnet school (Arabic Immersion, Blackshear Montessori, Baker Montessori, Garden Oaks Montessori, Helms Dual Language, Mandarin Chinese Immersion, and Wharton Dual Language), they will automatically be enrolled at that same school for Kindergarten. Families do not need to reapply.
  • Parents that are interested in their child attending a non-zoned school in Kindergarten must apply to the K-12 School Choice Application that opened on December 10th and will close on February 12th.
    • If a student is currently enrolled in Pre-K at a school that is not their zoned school, that student will receive priority in the lottery above other non-zoned students.  This will help ensure more families can continue in the pathway they started.
